FAQ
Where can I buy / try xInstaller and how much is it going to cost me?
Currently you can buy xInstaller from Handango and PalmGear at our introductory price of $29.99.
Why would I use an installer when my user can just double click a Palm file and use the installer on the Palm Desktop?
Over the years certain de facto standards have emerged... one of them being an installer. Many of us make our living selling Palm software and there's just something about having a professional looking installer that adds value to our already awesome applications. Let's not also forget that your user may forget to install a critical file if your application requires multiple files to be installed. If you need more convincing, just head over to http://www.palm.com/support/macintosh/installappmac.html for six more reasons why your user deserves xInstaller.
Will the xInstaller support Mac OS X?
Yes. We already have the new Palm CDK for Mac OS X and will be actively working on Mac OS X support.
What size difference will my downloads have when bundled with the xInstaller?
xInstaller is roughly 500KB unstuffed. On average we've noticed file sizes of about 300KB complete with PRC, docs, etc. when Stuffed.
What exactly can I change in the xInstaller to customize it for my software title?
Pretty much everything. The installer has a welcome screen, read me screen, license screen and thank you screen that are completely customizable.
Will xInstaller support installing conduits?
No. However, we have worked with several companies developing customized installers for their specific needs. If you are interested in this service please contact us at sales@xaplos.com
My application has multiple PRCs, PQAs, and/or PDBs, what do I do?
Simply place all the Palm-related files you want installed into the 'Handheld Files' folder. All files in this folder will be installed into the user's Palm device (assuming they are valid Palm files).
Does the xInstaller technology run on Windows-based PCs?
No. The installer is a Mac-based application and will only execute on Macs. We are working on a new service that would provide our PC friends with the ability to offer a professional installer for their Mac customers so stayed tuned for more details.
How difficult is it to customize the xInstaller for my application?
Not difficult at all. Simply download ResEdit, if you don't already have it, and use it to open the resources of the xInstaller application. You can change just about anything you'd like. Refer to the documentation for specific details.
What do I need to customize xInstaller?
The only other tool you'll need is Apple's ResEdit application which is a free download from http://developer.apple.com/tools/legacy.html
What exactly can I do after I've paid for xInstaller?
Pretty much anything you like. Use it to distribute your demo and registered programs. Remember there's no royalty or anything which means once you've registered the program you are entitled to distribute your solutions as you please.
What's the difference between what I downloaded and the 'registered' version?
Nothing. We have been developing for the Palm and Mac community for years and trust that our colleagues will do the right thing:-)
How will updates / upgrades be handled?
You will be entitled to free upgrades and updates for 1 year.
Won't I loose any changes I've made to resources when upgrading xInstaller?
Yes and no. It's true that all your changes will not be evident in the next release; however, if all you are changing is the 'TEXT' resources you can easily cut and paste these values from your 'older' installer. The same holds true if you've really done some major customization with icons, window titles, etc. |
